Ascent: 590m / 1900ft
"The Hatterrall Sledge is a new updated version of the Hatterrall Hammer Fell race. Start and finish is in the same place, but otherwise it's longer, higher, less road, more open fell with a few route 'choices'. Would recommend a recce to work out best lines... not a really a race for 'novice' fell runners - weather in February likely to be grim, you will need to self-navigate across open fell in places - if lucky you will find some nice sheep trods. The start and finish fields will be marked to a stile – from there on you need to find your way to all the checkpoints in order. The route is fairly straightforward, if weather is good! Sounds good, doesn’t it?"
The Old Pandy Inn, A465, Pandy, Abergavenny, Np7 8DR. (GR SO335225)
Full kit may be required as required and specified by the race organiser
At the Old Pandy Inn and on the roads when car park is full.
You must visit all the checkpoints.
You do not need to revisit checkpoint 1 on the way back and can choose your own descent route.
The route from checkpoint 2 to checkpoint 3 is not on a defined path and it is down to the runner to pick their own route.
Note, the fields are out of bounds, you must stay on the mountain!
The route from checkpoint 4 back to the path is not marked and it is down to the runner to make their own route choice.
Finally, the first section of the race (and the last) is across farm fields and may not follow the public right of way so this section should not be reccied. The route over this part of the course may change in future years and will be marked. The marking route must be followed on race day.
